About the Masterclass
9 singers will be given the opportunity to sing for Ms. Dahl and benefit from her immense knowledge of the voice and years of performing experience. Audience members will also learn as they watch and listen to Ms. Dahl work with the singers. Students of NATS and non-‐NATS teachers alike are invited to apply. Non-‐NATS members are also most welcome to be part of the audience. The sessions will include introductory remarks and a time for questions and observations. To pre-‐register, please fill out the appropriate field and mail the form along with your cheque to the address on pg. 5. Audience members may also register and pay at the door on the day of the masterclass. Singing participants must pre-‐register and pay in full in advance.

Singing participants must be performing at an intermediate or higher level of ability (Conservatory Grade 6 and up). Ms Dahl has agreed to work with singers in both classical and popular vocal styles (including belt voice) and of any age, providing they are singing beyond the beginner level. There will be no opportunity for boys with changing voices to participate in this workshop.

Participants will not be pre-‐auditioned but will be selected on a first come, first served basis. The first 9 fully paid registrations from qualified singers received will be invited to sing for Ms. Dahl. The tenth will be invited to sit as an alternate in the event that a participant is unable to perform due to illness. However, no more than 5 of any one voice type/style will be invited to sing, in order to ensure a variety of voice types and repertoire on the day.

Those NOT selected for participation will have their cheques returned to them and are invited to be audience members for the event.

Workshop Details

It is not unusual to hear singing teachers say “if you can sing classically, you can sing anything”. This is simply not true. Classical singing, aimed at classical repertoire, develops many useful vocal capacities, but there are some very specific abilities that it does not develop and some abilities that it can absolutely interfere with developing that are necessary requisites in CCM styles. Looking at classical training as a “one size fits all” approach is unfortunate, as the commercial success of all CCM styles continues to grow, while the opposite can be said to be true of classical music of all kinds.

Classical vocal pedagogy offers no approach to help a student master a rock song except the two tried and true tools from traditional vocal instruction: breath support and resonance (or placement). In all but the most unusual cases, these are not nearly adequate to meet functional needs of singers who must perform “Gethsemane” from Jesus Christ Superstar eight shows a week on Broadway. SVW™ The LoVetri Method exists to rectify this situation.
